History

"I adore walks along the Stradun late at night, when there is no one around reminding me with their attire as to what year it is. It is then that I imagine the Dubrovnik of times long past and it feels wonderful!"
Ana Van der Weken, Rotterdam, Netherland

  • The old Town Walls, made up from several fortresses, towers and fortifications, speak of Dubrovnik's abundant history and are counted amongst the most massive and magnificent objects of their kind in Europe. Minčeta, the large round tower and the most northerly point of Dubrovnik’s fortifications, is almost the Town's emblem, while the Revelin fortress, with its magnificent inner rooms, was once used as a city hall and is today frequently a host to musicians, as a type of a concert hall. The Lovrijenac Fortress, foremostly renowned around the world as a perfect setting for performances of Shakespeare's "Hamlet", stands erect forty metres above the sea and was once the town's main strategic vantage point.
  • The Sponza Palace, formerly a treasury, is today the home to the Historical Archives and a spectacular stage for musical and theatrical performances. Duke's Palace, previously the heart of all political and diplomatic life, the Dominican Monastery, one of the most beautiful monuments of the old Town, Orlando's Pillar with an image of the knight and warrior Orlando, or even the church of St. Blaise, Dubrovnik's patron, are only some of uncountable historical and cultural sights inside this town.
