Culture

While walking through the town of Krk, it seems as though I am walking through a great museum under the clear sky! However, nowhere is there an unfriendly guard, and there are people living in this museum, carefree and kind, and the tradition and culture which they so selflessly offer is truly unbelievable! Martin Sterr, Germany

  • Within the old walls of the town, on the very same streets, life has flourished on Krk for over two thousand years. It is reputed as being the oldest continually inhabited locality in the entire Kvarner region. The Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady is a significant architectural monument in the town, while the two storey Romanesque basilica St. Kvirin with its construction is one of the most unusual churches.
  • Other sights like the Frankopan castle, bishop’s residence and palace reveal secrets of long ago. One must also not forget to mention that the Island of Krk  is the cradle Croatian literacy with the oldest dated written monument of the Croatian language, the Baška Tablet.
