Although many visitors simply want to luxuriate on the fabulous beaches there are plenty of things to see on the Island of Pag. Croatia and the Kvarner archipelago are rich in historical treasures. Many cultures have claimed the Island of Pag during the centuries, all leaving legacies to be explored. Delve into the Pag’s fascinating past at the Stomorica Archaeological collection with its display of pre-historic jewellery, one of the most important exhibits on the Adriatic.
At the Novalja Town Museum visitors can learn more about the archaeological history of the island and monumental buildings such as the noble Duke’s Palace built by the Venetians in the 15th century. Visitors can also explore an underwater Roman aqueduct that courses beneath the town. Take time to marvel at several other attractions on Pag Island including the 14th century Benedictine monastery of St. Margarita, housing one of the oldest monastic communities in the world, and the Pag Lace Museum for an overview of the island’s most famous craft. The quaint simplicity of St. Mary’s Church blends in perfectly with the surroundings of Pag and should be on every itinerary when visiting the town. Offshore too, the waters of Pag Island covet many a sunken treasure such as the remains of a ship laden with amphora which sank in the bay of Vlaška mala. Of course, not all of Pag Island attractions are signposted. Stomorica Archaeological collection

In the archaeological museum in Novalja you can see a historical collection of the island of Pag which contains valuable archaeological artefacts. The most significant exhibits are the pre-historic specially made bracelets and jewellery. This valuable collection is counted as one of the most important monuments on the Adriatic.

Visit the town museum in Novalja and learn more about the rich archaeological history of the Novalja area. The museum is especially famous for the so called Italian buža, an antique underwater aqueduct that has its entrance in the museum and exit in the Novalja Polje. Here you can also see an interesting photographic exhibition of the Pag underwater world and a display about the amphora site.

In the bay of Vlaška mala the remains were found of a merchant ship that carried amphorae intended for Mediterranean trade. Today this site is safe-guarded in an iron cage and is available for all those who love the underwater world and antiques.

This monastery dating from 1318 is located in the town of Pag. This monastery is one of the oldest monastic communities in the world, and in past times the Benedictines used to offer courses in how to make lace.

The Romanesque church of St. Martin was founded in 1335 and was of great significance, whilst the settlement of Stara Povljana didn’t become inhabited until the beginning of the 15th century. Since then the church lost its importance and in Stara Povljana a grave was found that has been all but destroyed.

Ancient wells from the Roman period have been found in Kolanjsko Polje, which were a part of the roman aqueduct that led to Caska. In past times, all the inhabitants of the island came to this place which is notable for its drinkable clean water which took to use in their households.

Duke’s Palace

The Duke’s Palace on Pag dates back to the 15th century and was the centre of the island and towns management all the way up to 1905. This castle was the seat for the Dukes who were installed by Venice, and the Noble and Town council sat there.

The town of Pag used to be surrounded by walls and towers. Today only the tower of Skrivanat has been preserved, which is the only remaining tower of the nine that surrounded the town.
