Island of Pag Bicycling

The variety of scenery and the beauty of the landscapes make the Island of Pag a natural choice for those looking to combine island discovery with healthy, active pursuits. With more than 115 kilometres of scenic mountain bike trails on the Island of Pag, one of the best ways to explore the island is on two wheels.
In Spring, lavender carpets the island in glorious swathes of fragrant purple, a perfect time to see the island in full bloom. However, anytime of the year is perfect for taking to one of 14 marked cycling paths that hug the sparkling coastline or delve into the untouched interior. Try the Vodice – Škunca Route starting at the town beach of Pag and ending in Novalja. During this ride you can visit many stunning coves and beaches, drink fresh spring water from the source of the Velebit and find a perfect picnic spot at the pine-shaded chapel of St. Jerolim. Also starting in the town of Pag, the Salty Route will lead you to the famous saltpans and onwards through the tall reeds to Gorica.
Other Island of Pag bike trails include the Bird Route, taking in a fascinating ornithological reserve. For those with a good level of stamina, the Pag Island Wine Route also offers wonderful views with the added opportunity to sample some of the produce from the island’s wine cellars. In addition to the more challenging routes, there are several trails suitable for the whole family that take in the beautiful landscapes of the island, idyllic swimming coves and small village taverns.

Vodice (Pag beach) - Sv. Jerolim - Gajac - Škunca (Novalja) Route

The route starts on the town beach of the town of Pag and goes through an inhabited area where you can have a rest and get refreshments. It then continues past some wonderful beaches and coves. Halfway down the route, you can find a source of clear, drinkable Velebit water and the naturist beach of St. Duh. You then continue further through the wonderful countryside, and you can find rest in the shade of the pines by the chapel of St. Jerolim, before you go on to end up in Novalja.

Salty Route, Stari grad - Gorica

This route will take you to the old part of the town of Pag and further on down a macadam path to the Pag saltpans. If you want to visit the saltpans you need to register yourself the days before at the town of Pag’s tourist board. After looking around the salt pans, the route will lead you through the reeds to Gorica.

Part of this route takes you on the same route as the “Salty route”, right up to the turning at Košljun. This is a route for experienced cyclists, since in addition to the macadam ascent, the last three kilometres of the route involves a wonderful but dangerous descent that leads you all the way to the town of Pag itself.

Take the “Salty route” from Pag (right turn at its exit) and after four kilometres there is a turning for this new route. It is exceptionally attractive for all cycling abilities because it takes you on a narrow quiet road that is asphalted. After 2.9 km you will arrive in an ornithological reserve. The route exits after 5.5 km in the interesting village of Vlašići. In addition to there being a wonderful beach, there is also healing mud here. Just past Vlašići a right turn leads you to Smokvica and the Smokvica route.

The Smokvica route requires great stamina so it is only recommended for experienced cyclists. A narrow road leads you from Vlašić to Smokvica, through pastures and lonesome sandy beaches to the start of one of the most difficult route on the island of Pag. It is difficult not only because of its length but also because of the very inaccessible terrain.

Prutna route

There are no places to rest on the Prutna route, or buildings or water sources so we recommend that you take enough water with you. The whole route leads you through a rocky terrain to the top of the small Prutna peninsula itself, and at the end of the route you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Pag Bridge.

For the first part of the Cape Dubrovnik route you go beside the coast through a wood, on whose edge there is a wonderful beach. The route then gently descends on path that is covered by sharp rocks so we recommend that you take extra caution. At the top of the route there is a wonderful view that stretches over Košljun bay, and after this you will go past some charming shepherds houses and sheep pens.

Šimuni – Girenica Bay Route

Right at the beginning of this route, on the left side, there is a turning for a campsite and a wonderful beach in the village of Šimuni. This is followed by a narrow, asphalted route which cuts across the road of Kolan-Mandre. After a crossroads, you will find two macadam routes which lead to the bay of Girenica. You can choose the route that leads directly to the cove or the route that starts after the driving towards Mandre. Soon you will come to the wonderful bay of Girenica, where during high season you can try specialities from the island of Pag in the restaurants.

Kolan Route

Kolan Route

The Kolan route is a short but interesting route because of the gully and high reeds as well as the ride through the field. The turning towards the village of Mandre is very difficult and we recommend that only very experienced cyclists go on it. At the end of the route you will reach the village of Kolan where you can get refreshments and try local Pag delicacies, such as Pag cheese, curd and Prošek.

The start of this 10.5 kilometre long route is found in Stara Novalja. The route starts with a difficult ascent and then continues on a macadam road where at the first diverging road you can go to a wonderful beach. There are two quarries and a field for sheep beside the route where you can turn off and take a break. There are a number of options if you want to continue cycling after the end of the 10.5 km route. If you take the Novalja - Žigljen road towards Žigljen and turn left for Žigljen, after two kilometres you will find a signpost for a turning towards the UFO park. You can continue further down the route towards the village of Caska and the famous Zrće beach.

The Novaljsko Polje route is an ideal route for the family and all those who love cycling in untouched natural surroundings. Enjoy riding through the wonderful countryside and the ride over the small bridges. Experienced cyclists can go via this route to the wine route or go down to Caska.

Due to its harsh incline, the wine route demands a very good level of fitness. At the end of this route, you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Novaljsko polje, and also try some of the many specialities and wines from the island of Pag in the wine cellar.

Caska - Metajna – Ručica Canyon Route

We definitely recommend that you take this trail because it offers a wonderful ride beside the field and a wonderful view of the bay of Pag. You can find refreshments in the villages of Kustići and Zubovići, and all the way on the route you can get down to the sea and go swimming on one of the many wonderful beaches. In the village of Metajna you can try the water from Velebit or the very tasty fried sprats. After a 2 km ride from Metajna you will reach the cove of Ručica and its wonderful beach where you can find refreshment in the Kanjon grill.

Novalja – Lun Route

All lovers of cycling will be delighted by this route which leads you from Novalja to Lun. If you go on this route you should definitely turn down to the pebbly beach which is located in the villages of Jakišnica and Potočnica. The last part of the route offers a very special experience since it leads through the olive groves, which has olive trees in it that are more than a thousand years old. You can take a break in the village of Lun and try Pag specialities in which there is a restaurant or inn.
