Between the Mirna valley in the north and the Limski Kanal Fjord in the south lies the most popular tourist region in the whole of Istria, perhaps even the whole of Croatia. Enchanting towns, vibrant resorts and historic villages link a kaleidoscope of landscapes that weave a patchwork of dizzying colour with silvery green olive groves, lush pine forests, meadows of Mediterranean flora and rich red sunsets that light the sky in a fiery glow. And all the time never far from the omnipresent shoreline fringed by white pebbly coves and lapped by the azure blue Adriatic. To capture the essence of Poreč, take to two wheels. Many biking trails reach into the heart of the region allowing the freedom to absorb the sights, sounds and smells at your own pace. Pedal between mesmerizing Roman artefacts and medieval villages, pausing at rustic taverns and pavement cafes before wheeling through pastoral meadowlands on yet another adventure. Many organized tours provide themed rides offering fascinating insights into the culture, history and people of Croatia and its turbulent past. Choose the Euphrasiana Trail, starting in Poreč’s old quarter with its stunning Roman Forum and famous Euphrasian Basilica. Wander through the 9th century fortified town of St. Lovreč before taking to the saddle once more for a scenic ride through a succession of picturesque Istrian villages. Or wheel past vineyards and fragrant pine forests on The Trail of St. Michael Underground. This fascinating ride along a Roman military road takes in the remains of the Benedictine abbey of St. Michael and leads to one of the area’s most visited tourist sites - the subterranean magic of the Baredine cave, lined with ornate stalactites and stalagmites.
