Art and Culture in Poreč

Just a short stroll away, the heart of Poreč showcases the fascinating culture Croatia is famed for. It’s a town where history lives and breathes alongside busy craft shops, open markets, lively promenade bars and restaurants serving succulent seafood and sweet pastries. Unsurprisingly for a town more than two thousand years old, the variety of art and cultural offerings in Poreč is astounding. During its often turbulent times, many nations left their legacy in art and architecture. From the Roman Empire through the Venetian, Byzantine and Austro-Hungarian times, evidence of their influence is apparent at every turn. Don’t miss the famous 1st century temples of Mars and Neptune, or the quaint Romanesque house near Marafor Square. The Poreč Homeland Museum is located in one of 15 Gothic palaces and houses many Roman artefacts and other historical exhibits. Take in the splendour of classical concert performances in the spectacular Euphrasius Basilica with its remarkable mosaics and marble columns, or wander along the cobbled atmospheric streets as the notes drift across the red tiled roofs of the old quarter. The town comes alive with the sight and sounds of jazz bands, musicians, dancers and artists, colouring the streets with a succession of street performances and outdoor galleries during Poreč’s vibrant summer festivals. Be sure to make full use of the concierge service at the Valamar Riviera Hotel to ensure you don’t miss out on the best art and cultural events in Istria.
