Island of Krk Attractions

The town and the island of Krk are a never ending resource for exploring the natural beauty, history, culture and particular way of life of these island people. The urban centre of the island is today the same as it was three thousand years ago – the town of Krk. Many towns that are today much more important and significant did not exist then.
Krk has kept the core of its personality and the demands of contemporary times have not hidden its distinctive soul, so that all who visit it still have the chance to enjoy its rich heritage.
When the Romans arrived on Krk they found a town that was already developed, and fit their buildings in amongst the existing ones. Thus, it has kept its original layout. Today its walls are mainly from the Middle Ages and parts of the Franciscan monastery, castle and coast come from the time of the Roman settlers.
The old town is the historical centre and nucleus of the town, and can be entered via four gates. The most interesting features are located inside them, and the area outside the walls has only developed in the last decade.
The small island of Košljun hides priceless cultural gems in the Franciscan monastery and ethnographic museum. You can see the first traces of Croat literature from the 12th century in Jurandvor. There are remains of Antique and middle aged architecture in Sepen bay beside Omišalj, the Venetian fortress on St. Marko and so on. They are only a part of the rich mosaic that the island of Krk proudly presents.
