Each year, one of the world’s most renowned open-water marathons takes place in Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. With nearly 50 years of tradition, the Faros Marathon has earned a place in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and continues to draw top athletes and ocean enthusiasts from around the world.
On Saturday, September 13, 2025, swimmers will face a demanding 3-kilometre course, split into two laps of 1.5 kilometres. The race begins on Stari Grad’s waterfront and winds through the island’s spectacular waters, offering both a test of endurance and the magic of the Mediterranean setting.
But the Faros Marathon is more than a race. It’s a celebration of sport, community, and Dalmatian culture. Visitors can enjoy a lively programme of events, local food and wine, and the unique atmosphere of one of the Adriatic’s oldest towns.
If you’re planning a trip to Hvar in September, this is your chance to experience a one-of-a-kind sporting event and the energy that has connected swimmers and sea lovers here for decades.
