Kilometres of well-tended beaches and paths surrounded by lush Mediterranean flora can be found bordering the crystal clear sea; one of the attractions earning Rabac its proud title of “Pearl of Kvarner”.
In the past in Croatia, a loggia was a meeting place for local groups to hear public announcements and watch various artistic performances. It often takes the form of an architectural feature such as an arched corridor. The Labin loggia in Crć square was built in1550 and is still used as a resting place by the townsfolk today and proves a popular attraction with visitors to Rabac.
For those looking for culture attractions in their free time, two of Istria’s most prized palaces are to be found in Labin. You’ll find a permanent exhibition of Mathija Vlačić Ilirik, a famous theologist, reformer and historian, at the Francovich Palace. While at the Battiala Lazzarina Palace many valuable exhibits are displayed in the National Museum.
Perched high above Rabac, the picturesque town of Labin holds many treasured legacies of Croatia’s turbulent history. To discover the ancient part of town, visiting groups must walk through the Sanfior gate, built in 1589. When passing through, look for a carved Labin crest and Venetian lion.
Another historical attraction near Rabac is the Teatrino. Built in 1839, this small building in Labin was originally used as a ‘fontik’ or grain storehouse before being used as a theatre and art exhibition space.
One of the biggest attractions in Labin near Rabac is the Church of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Built in 1336 on the foundations of an 11th century church, its facade features an impressive blend of Venetian Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Look out for the carved Venetian lion over the doorway.
The remains of Kunci, a settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, provide one of the oldest attractions in Rabac. Founded by the Celts in the 4th century, the remains can be found in the medieval hilltop town of Labin and is one of the most important relics of the town’s historical heritage.
